Hatch backs should be raised no higher than the top of your vehicle (level with your roof).  If your hatch opens above your roofline this blocks the view of others.
You are responsible for keeping it lowered using a rope or similar method.

Hatch back lights can be turned off by using a pen or a piece of metal to close the opened latch - to re-open the latch, just pull the lever.
